  • Description

As the international outcry grew against the death sentences passed on Soviet Jews, who were accused of hijacking in Leningrad, members of copenhagen's Jewish community marched in protest on the Soviet Aeroflot airline offices on Saturday (December 26).

About 200 demonstrators made their peaceful protest outside the Aeroflot offices.

While the demonstrators took to the streets, there was diplomatic activity in several Western capitals in an effort to persuade the Soviet authorities to commute the death sentences -- passed on two Soviet Jews accused of attempting to hijack a Soviet airliner to the West. Nine other defendants in the trials were sentenced to labour camps. In Copenhagen, Danish Premier Hilmar Baunsgaard declared that he hoped the death sentences would be commuted.
