INTRODUCTION: In Ghana, festivities have begun for the fifth anniversary of the coup which brought Lieutenant-Colonel Ignatius Acheampong to power on the 13th of January, 1972.

SYNOPSIS: One of the events which has now become an annual affairs is the swimming and regatta boat race competitions at Jamestown beach in Accra, the Ghanaian capital.

Commodore C.K. Djang, Ghana's Navy Commander and member of the ruling Supreme Military Council, deputised for Colonel Acheampong at the regatta. The swimmers come from various regions along the Ghanaiam coast -- most of them are fishermen. The Ghanaian government has encouraged the fishermen to hold these events to entertain the general public and themselves, so they don't feel out of the celebrations, which consists mainly of military parades.

The race is not much more than a hundred yards through the surf, but it is conducted at a fast pace. The winner gets 50 Cedi -- about 20 pounds sterling. Mr. Winfried Afadzim of Keta town, border, was the first man home this year.

But the main event is the boat race. There were 15 teams originally, but nine were eliminated during the heats, leaving just these six for the finals.

The first prize was a carton of gin and 200 Cedi -- about 80 pounds sterling -- but it was clear that the teams were racing more for the prestige of winning than for the prizes. The six finalists were prizes. The six finalists were Cape Coast, Winneba and Abandzi from the Central Region, Shama and Axim from west Ghana, Ada second team from east Ghana, and the Teshi team from near Accra.

The teams from the central region did best. Abandzi came first for the gin and 200 Cedi, and the Shama team from the west region came second to win 150 Cedi -- about 60 pounds sterling. The other central region team, Winneba, took third place for 100 Cedi -- about 40 pounds sterling -- and eight bottles of drink.
