  • Description

British motor cyclist, Phil Read, who's already won seven world championships, added another one to his total when he won the first World Championship Formula One motor cycle race at the Isle of Man on Saturday (11 June). Read has also won seven Tourist Trophy races on the demanding 37 and-three-quarter mile (60 kilometre) Isle of Man course.

SYNOPSIS: More than 70 riders entered for the first Formula One championship race which was scheduled to cover five laps or 188 miles (303 kilometres). Read has boycotted the last four Tourist Trophy meetings saying the track was too dangerous and lacked adequate safety facilities.

This year Read decided to ride again after seeing that the track and its facilities had been improved. The Tourist Trophy race was deprived of its World Championship status by the International Motorcycle Federation (FIM) last year, but was granted the new Formula One championship this year.

Heavy rain during the race forced the organisers to shorten it to four laps of the course, and several riders said later they had difficulty with their machines in the slippery conditions. Parts of the course were even flooded during the downpour.

But at the finish it was Phil Read's race. He won by more than a mile from Roger Nicholls, with Ian Richards, third. Read's average speed was just over 97 miles an hour (155 kilometres an hour). He earned an estimated GBP10,000 (17,000 US dollars) for his win.

There will be another six races on the Isle of Man circuit during the next week, including a special Jubilee invitation race.
