  • Description

Denmark's Ole Olsen, won his second British League riders championship, at Manchester's Belle Vue stadium on Saturday night (16 October).

SYNOPSIS: Olsen, who races for English League club Coventry, was unbeatable on the night, winning all five of his heats. He led Ivan Mauger of New Zealand in this the fifth heat, until Mauger crashed. The race was re-started but there was no stopping Olsen who was too fast for world champion Peter Collins. Collins, who won the title last year and the year before, finished second.

The top riders form each of Britain's 19 clubs, compete each year for the championship. Many of them come form overseas. After it started in 1965, the league title was won six years in succession by Englishman Barry Briggs. In the past five years it has been shared by Mauger, who won it in 1971 and 1973, Olsen, who also won it in 1972 and Collins. Collins, who is only 22, was favoured to win his third title on his home track. He went on the win the rest of his heats, but his one defeat by Olsen in the fifth heat cost him the British championship. Here he easily wins the 18th heat form John Louis of Reading.

29-year-old Olsen was the only Scandinavian in the otherwise entirely British and Commonwealth field. He was world champion last year, and has twice won the world 'Long Track' title, though this year he came second to Mauger. Olsen has already had considerable success with his new club Coventry, which he joined after leaving another midland club earlier this year.
