Background: Two Romanians attempted to set themselves on fire outside the Australian Parliament on Wednesday (6 January). They were among four Romanians who began a hunger strike outside the Parliament eight days earlier to publicise their demands that their families be allowed to join them in Australia. Police were on hand with a fire extinguisher and an asbestos blanket out were too late to prevent one man, Mr. Petru Sarbu, burning himself on the legs and feet. Another Romanian Mr. Csaba Finna, doused himself with petrol, but police managed to prevent him from setting fire to himself.
