  • Description

HONGKONG HAS A THRIVING SHIPBREAKING INDUSTRY. THIS INDUSTRY SERVES TO PROVIDE THE COLONY WITH MANY OTHER INDUSTRIES FROM THE PRODUCTION OF MILD STEEL TO A NUMBER OF GOODS MANUFACTURED FROM THAT STEEL.

THERE ARE MANY BREAKING YARDS IN HONGKONG AND MOST OF THEM HAVE THEIR OWN STEEL ROLLING MILLS TO HANDLE THE SCRAP METAL FROM THE SHIPS. THE MILD STEEL PRODUCED IS THEN FURTHER PROCESSED TO PRODUCE VARIOUS MATERIALS FOR THE BUILDING INDUSTRY.

THE YARD ON OUR FILM IS JOINTLY OWNED BY A JAPANESE STEEL MILL AND A BRITISH COMPANY. WHEN OUR CAMERAMAN VISITED THE YARD TWO FRIGATES OF THE ROYAL NEW ZEALAND NAVY WERE AMONG THE SHIPS WAITING FOR SCRAPPING.

BECAUSE SO MANY OLD CARGO BOATS ARE BEING USED TO TAKE FREIGHT TO VIETNAM, BUSINESS HAS NOT BEEN AS BRISK RECENTLY. BUT THE INDUSTRY CONTINUES TO PROGRESS, PRODUCING NOT ONLY STEEL FOR HONGKONG'S INDUSTRY, BUT EVEN ENOUGH TO EXPORT, MAINLY TO COUNTRIES IN SOUTH EAST ASIA.
