    FORTY THOUSAND PEOPLE DEMONSTRATED OUTSIDE ARGENTINA'S NATIONAL CONGRESS BUILDING IN BUENOS AIRES, ON FRIDAY, (DECEMBER 6), AS A SIX-HOUR GENERAL STRIKE, CALLED IN PROTEST AGAINST UNEMPLOYMENT AND INFLATION, PARALYSED THE CITY.

    THE STRIKE WAS THE LATEST MOVE BY ARGENTINA'S TRADE UNIONS IN A CAMPAIGN AIMED AT URGING THE GOVERNMENT TO TAKE ACTION AGAINST THE RAPIDLY MOUNTING COST OF LIVING AND THE GROWING NUMBER OF UNEMPLOYED THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY.

    THE STRIKE BEGAN AT 10 O'CLOCK IN THE MORNING, AND SHORTLY AFTERWARDS A LARGE CROWD OF STRIKERS BEGAN MARCHING ON THE CONGRESS BUILDING.THEY CARRIED SIGN ASKING FOR HIGHER WAGES, PRICE CONTROLS AND THE REMOVAL OF RESTRICTIONS ON POLITICAL ACTIVITY.

    ARGENTINA'S MINISTER OF THE INTERIOR SPOKE TO THE HUGE CROWD.LATER, A LARGE NUMBER BROKE THROUGH A POLICE CORDON AND CROWDED ON TO THE STEPS OF THE CONGRESS BUILDING.THERE WERE, HOWEVER, FEW INCIDENTS AND BY THE TIME THE STRIKE ENDED A 4 O'CLOCK IN THE AFTERNOON, MOST OF THE DEMONSTRATORS HAD DISPERSED.
