May Day was celebrated by Greek Cypriots in Nicosia with processions through the streets by workers. Groups of people sang folk songs and carried slogans about the Cyprus situation.
The processions and festivities passed off without incident. Security forces were on duty but had no occasion to interfere.
In the afternoon there was a big flower show in the town's Stadium. There were parades of beautifully flower-decked chariots and floats manned by young boys and girls dressed in fancy costumes of all kinds.
The chariots were designed to represent prominent events and figures in Cyprus life -- a "Cyprus Tavern," "Enosis," "Cyprus Products," and so on. The show concluded with local dances by boys and girls dressed in colourful national and local costumes.
