    General George Grivas, former EOKA leader, during a political trip to the Greek Mediterranean island of Crete, attended a Te Deum at Rethymnon Cathedral Nov 9 to mark the 93rd anniversary of the massacre of Cretan men, women and children, during the Ottoman Occupation.

    The General, meeting Cretan leaders to gather support for his Movement, me an enthusiastic welcome from many Cretans. Crowds gathered outside the Cathedral to see him enter.

    After the Te Deum, Cretan boys and girls in island costume, and Service units paraded at the Commemoration monument. During the ceremony General Grivas laid a wreath on the memorial tomb of those who died in the massacre.

    At one point in a speech to the people of Crete, General Grivas said the massacre had inspired him in his struggle against the British in Cyprus.

    General Grivas, due to openly launch his political campaign towards the end of this month was expected to publish his memoirs at the same time. Reports from Athens this month indicated the General, supported by former greek Prime Minister Sophocles Venizelos, the Cretan Liberal leader, would eventually prepare to precipitate a general election in Greece - not due to be held until 1962.
