    A BRITISH TUG TOOK THE NORWEGIAN TANKER 'NORA' OF 9,000 TONS IN TOW IN THE ENGLISH CHANNEL TODAY AFTER A COLLISION WHICH STARTED FIRES ON BOTH THE 'NORA' AND THE 30,000 AMERICAN-OWNED TANKER, 'OTTO N.MILLER'.AS THE TUG WAS HEADING FOR THE NORA'S POSITION OF THE ISLE OF WIGHT, SOUTHERN ENGLAND, A RADIO MESSAGE SAID THAT HER FIRE WAS MUCH REDUCED.

    AS EIGHT CREWMEN OF THE NORWEGIAN TANKER HELPED THEIR MASTER FIGHT THE FLAMES EARLY THIS MORNING, 31 MEMBERS OF THE CREW AND TWO WOMEN WERE HEADING FOR EASTBOURNE IN SOUTHERN ENGLAND, IN A LIFEBOAT.ONE OF THE NORA'S CREW WAS REPORTED TO BE BADLY INJURED.

    THE DRAMA TOOK PLACE IN EARLY MORNING FOG ABOUT 20 MILES (30 KILOMETRES) OFF EASTBOURNE.FIRES BROKE OUT IN BOTH SHIPS AND ONE MAN FROM THE OTTO N.MILLER WAS REPORTED MISSING.THE NORWEGIAN MASTER REFUSED TO LEAVE THE BURNING NORA, AND LATER HER CREW - WHO HAD BEEN TAKEN OFF BY THE BRITISH MOTOR VESSEL VIVES RETURNED TO HELP FIGHT THE FIRE.

    THEN, FOR A SECOND TIME BECAUSE OF REPORTED DANGER TO LIFE, THE MAJORITY OF THE CREW WERE OFF BY THE EASTBOURNE LIFEBOAT WHICH HEADED TOWARDS ITS HOME PORT.
