  • Description

Visnews filmed the annual carnival of the "Blanc Moussis" (White Monks) in the little Belgian village of Stavelot. Dressed in white costumes resembling monks' robes, and wearing comic masks with long noses the carnival public sang, danced and showered each other with confetti. At the climax of the Stavelot "White Monks Carnival" the big parade - folklore groups, decorated floats, magnificently dressed brass hands, paraded through the streets.

The Stavelot carnival is unusual because of the custom of wearing white monks' habits. In the 13th century monks from the monastery of Stavelot - the "Blanc Moussins" - tock part in the village carnival. They covered their robes with white sheets and were soon being imitated by the villagers who saw in this a welcome suggestion for a new type of carnival dress.

Though the monks were forbidden in 1499 by their Abbot to take part in the carnival celebrations the white monk's dress became a traditional part of the Stavelot Carnival.
