    Zambia's President Dr. Kenneth Kaunda presented honours and awards to 24 persons in an investiture ceremony to mark Africa Freedom Day on Sunday (25 May).

    The investiture, at the State House in Lusaka, included five Europeans who took part in the recovery of bodies form a bus that crashed into the Zambesi River.

    Most of the other awards were made for long and dedicated service to Zambia in the fields of defence, medicine, education and public service.

    The length of service of the recipients ranged from 18 years to 35 years.

    SYNOPSIS: Africa Freedom Day was celebrated in Zambia on Sunday with an investiture ceremony at the State House in Lusaka. President Dr. Kenneth Kaunda presented honours and awards to twenty-four recipients for gallantry and long and dedicated service to Zambia.

    A special feature of the ceremony was the presentation of the President's Medal for Gallantry to five Europeans. A former district commissioner, Ian Breingan, and four deep-water divers received Gallantry Medals for their part in recovering bodies from a bus that crashed into the Zambesi River. The investiture was one of the biggest held at State House and honours were awarded in six categories.

    Another recipient was Sister Rachel Rivard. Most of the honours were for long and dedicated service to Zambia in the fields of defence, medicine, education and general public service.
