Background: The motor industries of the World are spending a great deal of money on attempts to develop a viable electric car. The current preoccupations with pollution and the earth's diminishing resources have added a powerful new impetus to such research.
However, M. Jules Leroy, an amateur inventor of Sedan in France, felt he cold not wait for the big combines to come up with results. He is eighty years old, and so he decided his own electric powered car.
He has adapted his own Citroen car for the purpose, and it now has a large six bladed propeller sticking out of the rear window. The car is powered - not by a petrol engine - but by six batteries which produce 72 volts.
The rear mounted propellor is part of the special mechanism he has designed to recharge the batteries when the car is in motion. The propellor is turned by the force of the wind as the car travels along, and that in turn drives a dynamo which recharges the batteries.
M. Leroy has hoped that the propellor would be able to recharge the batteries at the same rate as they used up energy - thereby achieving almost perpetual motion. Unfortunately, the batteries still use up energy faster than they can be recharged.
He has not given up hope however, and is working on all sorts of refinements. M. Leroy intends to improve the car's basic performance. At the moment the batteries will take it a distance of 30 kilometres at a speed of 40 kilometres an hour. If the speed is reduced to 30 kilometres an hour, the vehicle will travel 45 kilometres without the batteries having to be recharged.
