  • Description

JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA.... TWO DACHSHUNDS, SUFFERING FROM A PARALYSIS OF THE BACK LEGS, HAVE BEEN HARNESSED TO LITTLE CHARIOT-LIKE CARTS TO HELP THEM TO WALK. THEY USE THEIR FRONT LEGS TO HAUL THEMSELVES ABOUT - AND HAVE BECOME A POPULAR SIGHT IN THE CITY.

MRS.LEILA WALTON'S PET FOUR-YEAR-OLD "BELLA" BECAME PARALYSED FROM THE CHEST DOWN. MRS.WALTON DID NOT WANT TO HAVE HER DESTROYED; SO SHE SOUGHT THE HELP OF ANOTHER DOG-LOVER WHO HAD BUILT A HARNESS AND CART FOR HIS OWN DOG, "JUDY".

BOTH CARTS HAVE RUBBER WHEELS, AND THE DOG "SITS" ON A FOAM RUBBER CUSHION FOR COMFORT. AND BOTH "BELLA" AND "JUDY" ARE NOW ABLE TO GO FOR LONG WALKS.

PROGRESS REPORT: "JUDY", MECHANICALLY AIDED FOR SIX MONTHS, IS REGAINING STRENGTH IN HER BACK LEGS. "BELLA" APPEARS HAPPY, BUT IT IS TOO EARLY YET TO TELL WHETHER HER CONDITION HAS IMPROVED BY USING THE CART.
