SYNOPSIS: Thousands of factory and dock workers in Haiphong, North Vietnam's largest port, attended a mass army recruitment rally earlier this month.

The recruitment rally is a follow-up to a nation-wide radio broadcast on the second of August calling for all young people in the country to join the army.

Regular soldiers and militiamen took part in the drive, explaining to the potential recruits their role in the country's fight, and recounting their experiences. Their weapons were described and their successes. Statistics were on display of the number of American aircraft claimed shot down - 3,373 of them, including jets, helicopters and non-piloted U.S. reconnaissance aircraft.

About 10,000 young men gathered in front of the Haiphong Citizen theatre., chanting slogans and singing. Their slogans read "We shall meet the demand of our country" and "We are ready to go to the front".

The Central Committee of the Ho Chi Minh youth organisation issued the radio call for recruits, in the name of Ho Chi Minh, the late President of North Vietnam. Both young men and women have answered the call.
