    In a May Day message President Idi Amin proclaimed victory in his war of economic independence in Uganda and said he was thinking of a "General Amin operation" to help liberate Africa.

    Later addressing a rally of troops and workers General Amin said he had decided to take what he called a short cut to economic independence.

    "The General Amin operation is going to include development and to continue the liberation of Africa", he said.

    General Amin took the salute at a march past of troops in Kampala City Square.

    Kampala was only one of the African capitals where May Day was celebrated with processions.

    Thousands of workers in Kenya marched through the streets of Nairobi. The march was led by the Prisons band. The march past was reviewed by kenya's Minister for Labour Mr. Eliud Mwendwa and trade union leaders, including Mr. Akumu, Secretary General of the Central Organisation of Trade Unions.

    In Dar-???s-Salaam, capital of Tanzania, there was a mass procession from the headquarters of the National Union of Tanganyika Workers to the Karume Memorial Stadium. The Prime Minister of Tanzania Rashidi M. Kawawa attended and received donations raised by workers.
