  • Description

San Francisco's mayor Joseph Alioto proclaimed Saturday(17 May)"New Games Day" on the occasion of the third annual New Games Tournament in the city's Golden Gate Park.

The Tournament is organised by California's New Games Foundation. People of all ages and backgrounds took part in the tournament, which is designed to encourage co-operation, rather than competition.

Mayor Alioto said the New Games motto "Play herd, play fair, nobody hurt" was an admirable ideal for human conduct.

The New Games Foundation said it invited the people of San Francisco to come together to celebrate their cultural, social, economic and racial differences.

Among the new games included in the tournament was "Boffin". In this game, competitors set about each other with plastic foam swords.

Another game is "People Passing", in which people are lifted and passed down a line over the heads of others.

Then there's the Mars Ball game, the Slaughter Game, the Log and Rope Game and Hay Throwing.

There are some old games -- namely British Bulldog, tug of war and Frisbee throwing.

But there are few rules and the interpretation of those is described as "loose".

The games are popular -- there were more than a hundred participants in the tug of war.

There are no losers, the object is to have fun and nobody seems to mind that the sports purist regards the whole affair as being rather childish.
