  • Description

UNDER A HAIL OF MACHINE-GUN FIRE, TWO EAST GERMAN FAMILIES CRASHED AN ARMOUR-PLATED BUS AT HIGH SPEED THROUGH BARRIERS TO WEST BERLIN YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY) IN ONE OF THE MOST DRAMATIC ESCAPES SINCE THE BERLIN WALL WAS ERECTED.

THE BUS WAS FITTED LIKE A MOTORISED BATTERING RAM, WITH A SNOW-PLOUGH NOSE AND COVERED WITH PROTECTIVE STEEL PLATES. IT CLEAVED THROUGH FRONTIER BARRIERS AT THE EAST GERMAN CHECKPOINT ON THE AUTOBAHN AT BABELSBERG, LEADING FROM WEST GERMANY TO BERLIN.

EAST GERMAN BORDER GUARDS SPRAYED THE BUS WITH BULLET, BUT ONLY ONE OF THE REFUGEES WAS INJURED - THE DRIVER WHOSE HANDS WERE CUT WHEN SHOTS SHATTERED THE WINDSCREEN.

HOME-MADE STEEL BLADES WERE FIXED IN FRONT OF THE BUS TO CUT BARBED WIRE AND CIRCULAR STEEL PLATES WERE BOLTED BETWEEN TWIN TYRES ON THE REAR WHEELS IN CASE BULLETS PUNCTURED THE TYRES.

THE REFUGEES - TWO COUPLES AND THEIR FOUR YOUNG CHILDREN - WAITED SEVERAL DAYS TO START THEIR FLIGHT BEFORE SETTING OUT ON CHRISTMAS EVE. POLICE SAID THEY CAME FROM NEUGERSDORF, IN THE SOUTH-EASTERN CORNER OF EAST GERMANY, ABOUT 155 MILES (250 KMS) FROM BERLIN.
