  • Description

French President De Gaulle, on a four-day tour of Southern France, visited the ancient University city of Montpelier, Feb 28.

Accompanied by Ministers of the Interior, Armed Forces, and Agriculture he heard the Bishop of Montpelier preach in the Cathedral on "Citizens' duties".

After visiting the Town Hall De Gaulle met University faculty members, and told them they were leaders in this great period of world-wide transition. "Everything is achieved by intellect, and you are the guides of intellect".

Later, the President addressed vast crowds in the city's main square - popularly called "the Egg". He praised the role of the French Army in Algeria, and went on to discuss the cold war. "When the two great powers agree to do away with their armaments we shall do away with ours, happily".

During the afternoon General De Gaulle donned military uniform for the first occasion on his tour, and reviewed 600 cadets and their officers at Salon de Province Flying School. "Mystere" jets staged a fly-past. After the review he flew directly back to Paris.
