  • Description

FIVE BRITISH ASIANS DEMONSTRATED OUTSIDE THE BRITISH HIGH COMMISSION IN NAIROBI ON WEDNESDAY (MARCH 24) AFTER THE HIGH COMMISSIONER, SIR ERIC NORRIS, REFUSED TO KEEP AN APPOINTMENT TO SEE A TWO-MAN DELEGATION.

THE FIVE WERE PART OF A TEAM OF NINE PROTESTORS WHO HAVE BEEN DEMONSTRATING OUTSIDE THE HIGH COMMISSION FOR A MONTH, TRYING TO GAIN ENTRY PERMITS TO BRITAIN. THEY CLAIM THAT, AS BRITISH PASSPORTS HOLDERS, THEY ARE ENTITLED TO LIVE IN BRITAIN. WEDNESDAY'S DEMONSTRATORS, WHO THREW THEIR PASSPORTS ON THE GROUND AND JUMPED ON THEM AFTER BEING EVICTED FROM THE BUILDING, SAID SIR ERIC HAD ORIGINALLY AGREED TO SEE TWO OF THEM -- BUT LATER REFUSED.

A HIGH COMMISSION STATEMENT TO THE PRESS, SAID HE HAD REVERSED HIS DECISION AFTER WIVES OF HIGH COMMISSION STAFF CONTINUED TO RECEIVE OFFENSIVE LETTERS FROM THE DEMONSTRATORS. ONE OF THE ASIANS DENIED THIS, SAYING THEY HAD MERELY APPEALED TO ONE OF THE WIVES FOR SYMPATHY. HE HIMSELF, HE SAID, HAD A SEVEN-MONTH-PREGNANT WIFE ALREADY IN BRITAIN.
