  • Description

ON TUESDAY AMERICA LAUNCHED ITS FIRST INTERPLANETARY EXPLORER SATELLITE FROM THE CAPE CANAVERAL MISSILE RANGE.KNOWN AS IMP-A.(INTERPLANETARY MONITORING PROBE), THE SATELLITE'S MISSION IS TO MEASURE MAGNETIC FIELDS, COSMIC RAYS, AND SOLAR WINDS IN INTERPLANETARY SPACE -- THE REGION BEYOND THE INFLUENCE OF THE EARTH'S MAGNETIC FIELD.

A THREE STAGE DELTA ROCKET, 90 FEET (27 METRES) TALL, PROPELLED THE IMP SATELLITE ON ITS VOYAGE.SCIENTISTS HOPE THE SATELLITE WILL SETTLE IN AN ORBIT RANGING FROM 125 MILES (201 KILOMETRES) TO 173,000 MILES (278,000 KILOMETRES) FROM THE EARTH SO THAT IT IS OUT OF THE EARTH'S MAGNETIC FIELD FOR TWO-THIRDS OF THE ORBIT.

THE LAUNCH HAD ALL THE APPEARANCES OF SUCCESS BUT SINCE IT WILL TAKE THE SATELLITE SOME 150 HOURS TO MAKE ONE ORBIT OF THE EARTH, THE SUCCESS OF THE OPERATION WILL NOT BE ASSURED UNTIL THE WEEK-END AT THE EARLIEST.
