  • Description

The bitter controversy in the Arab world over President Sadat's visit to Israel came to a head at the United Nations on Tuesday afternoon. Opening a General Assembly debate on the Middle East, the Syrian delegate accused President promptly walked out, refusing to listen to what he called 'Syria's insults'.

SYNOPSIS: One front line Arab state has broken its silence to express support for the Egyptian move.

President Nimeiry, of Sudan, arrived in Cairo on Tuesday at his own request to congratulate the Egyptian leader. President Nimeiry's visit was announced only some 12 hours earlier, and observers say it seemed to have been deliberately timed to off-set criticism by other Arab countries.

The Sudanese leader called President Sadat's trip a victory, and a source of pride for the Arab world. His reception was warm and brief.

An hour and a half later, President Nimeiry was again passing through Cairo airport on his way home. And again, President Sadat was there to see him on his way.
