Background: The United States Secretary of State, Dr. Henry Kissinger, arrived in Dacca with his wife Nancy on Wednesday (30 October). He is the highest-ranking US official to visit Bangladesh since its independence.
During his 19-hour visit, Dr. Kissinger held formal talks with the Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the Foreign Minister Dr. Kamal Hossain.
A joint communique said the two sides agreed that progress towards normalisation of relations on the sub-continent was encouraging and they hoped the remaining issues would be settled through negotiation.
Before he left for Pakistan the following day, Dr. Kissinger indicated that he would convey the feelings of Bangladesh on its unresolved disputes with Pakistan during his talks in Islamabad.
He also assured Bangladesh that the United States Government would do its utmost to help the flood-ravaged nation survive its present problems. U.S. assistance to Bangladesh now totals more than 500 million dollars (about GBP210 million sterling).
