  • Description

ROME, SUNDAY, WHERE POPE JOHN IN TRADITIONAL CEREMONY RECEIVED CHRISTMAS GREETINGS IN THE CLEMENTINE HALL FROM THE CARDINALS OF THE SACRED COLLEGE, ROMAN PRELATES AND RANKING MEMBERS OF THE PONTIFICAL HOUSEHOLD. LATER THE 81-YEAR-OLD PONTIFF TOLD DIPLOMATS FROM 50 COUNTRIES THAT IT WAS A "HEARTENING SIGN" THAT THE DANGER TO WORLD PEACE THIS YEAR WAS "SPEEDILY DISSIPATED." THE POPE WAS REPLYING TO THE TRADITIONAL CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEAR WISHES OF THE DIPLOMATIC CORPS ACCREDITED TO THE HOLY SEE IN THE CONSISTORIAL HALL OF THE OFFICIAL PAPAL APARTMENT IN THE VATICAN.

IN HIS AUDIENCE WITH THE CARDINALS, POPE JOHN SPOKE ABOUT THE VATICAN ECUMENICAL COUNCIL AND REFERRED BRIEFLY TO HIS HEALTH, WHICH HAD CAUSED "SOME TREPIDATION" IN THE PAST FEW WEEKS, SAYING "OUR HUMBLE LIFE, LIKE THE LIFE OF EACH OF US, IS IN THE HANDS OF GOD."
REFERRING TO "PEACE" IN HIS AUDIENCE WITH DIPLOMATS, THE PEOPLE SAID IT WAS EVERYONE'S DUTY TO ASSURE SUCCESS OF THE EFFORTS OF "INTERNATIONAL LEVEL INSTITUTIONS WHICH DEVOTE THEMSELVES TO THE TASK OF MAKING LAW RESPECTED AND OF THE RESTRAINING VIOLENCE."
THE THEME OF PEACE WAS TAKEN UP YESTERDAY (MONDAY) BY THE POPE IN HIS CHRISTMAS MESSAGE BROADCAST TO MILLIONS OF POTENTIAL LISTENERS IN ITALY, FRANCE, BELGIUM, SPAIN, PORTUGAL, SWITZERLAND, IRELAND, MONTE CARLO, AND LUXEMBOURG. HE RECALLED APPEALS HE HAD MADE, NOTABLY DURING THE CUBAN CRISIS, TO WORLD LEADERS TO MAINTAIN PEACE.
