INTRODUCTION: The assasination of West Germany's Chief Public Prosecutor, Siegfried Buback, on Thursday (7 April) came while he was on his way to work in the town of Karlsruhe. Four assassins riding two powerful motorcycles riddled his limousine with machine-gun bullets, instantly killing Herr Buback and his chauffeur instantly. His bodyguard died later in hospital.

SYNOPSIS: The attackers escaped, but police and politicians said the shooting looked like the work of anarchists. The prosecutor's limousine was ambushed a little after nine in the morning. The motorcycles stopped beside the car at a traffic light and one of the four attackers fired into it at close range.

Herr Buback, who had been Chief Public Prosecutor for three years, was an outspoken critic of guerrilla violence. He led investigations into crimes of violence with which leaders of the Baader-Meinhof gang and other anarchists were later charged.

Herr Buback is the second leading justice official to be murdered in Germany within three years. In November 1974, West Berlin Chief Judge Guenter Von Drenkmann was shot in front of his wife by masked gunmen who burst into their flat.

About 30 members and sympathisers of the Baader-Meinhoff group have been on hunger strike for the last week in various prisons in West Germany.
