  • Description

A ROAD THAT WILL BRING NEW LIFE TO A DESOLATE AREA OF NORTH EAST THAILAND WAS OPENED THIS WEEK. IT'S A 25 MILE (32 KILOMETRE) HIGHWAY THAT THE BRITISH ARMY HAS CUT THROUGH DESOLATE SCRUBLAND ABOUT 350 MILES (560 KILOMETRES) FROM BANGKOK, THE CAPITAL.

THE PROJECT BEGAN IN JANUARY OF LAST YEAR. THE BRITISH ARMY ENGINEERS HAD JUST COMPLETED AN AIRSTRIP, BUILT BY THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT AS A GBP1 MILLION GIFT TO THE PEOPLE OF THAILAND.

THEN THEY WENT ON TO START WORK ON THE ROAD, WHICH HAS BEEN PAID FOR JOINTLY BY THE BRITISH AND THAI GOVERNMENTS. IT RUNS FROM LOENG NOK THAI, WHERE THE BRITISH ENGINEERS HAVE THEIR CROWN BASE CAMP, TO BAN PHOK, WHERE IT WILL LINK UP WITH THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY SYSTEM.

THE NEW ROAD WAS OFFICIALLY OPENED BY THE THAI DEPUTY MINISTER OF DEFENCE, AIR CHIEF MARSHAL DAWEE CHULLASAPYA, WHO ARRIVED AT CROWN CAMP BY HELICOPTER WITH THE BRITISH AMBASSADOR, SIR NIEL PRITCHARD AND THE BRITISH ARMY'S CHIEF ENGINEER FAR EAST, BRIGADIER CLUTTERBUCK.

THE ROAD HAS ALREADY BROUGHT CHANGES FOR THE 50,000 PEOPLE WHO CAN USE IT. 26 BUSES USE IT EVERY DAY IN AN AREA WHERE WALKING AND WATER BUFFALO HAVE BEEN THE ONLY MEANS OF TRANSPORT, AND THE MONSOON MONTHS HAVE MEANT COMPLETE ISOLATION.

THE BRITISH ENGINEERS WILL RETURN TO THEIR BASE IN SINGAPORE BY THE END OF THIS MONTH (APRIL), LEAVING THEIR CAMP AND MOST OF THEIR HEAVY MACHINERY TO THE THAI ARMY.
