  • Description

About 100 students of Brussels University, Belgium, stoned the Soviet Embassy and attacked the Embassy of the United Arab Republic in Brussels, Feb 17. Other white and coloured students, said to be Communists, had planned a big demonstration outside the Katangese (Congo Republic) Building in the Belgium capital, the same day.

A strong police force guarded the street and Building - and the students were stopped from reaching it. The students were protesting against the murder of Mr. Patrice Lumumba, former Premier of the Congo Republic. One black student carried a picture of Lumumba, and other students marched with placards.

Police were also stationed outside the Government Ministries in Brussels, and were prepared for any trouble. But the demonstration broke up without other incident. Three Congolese students handed a note of protest to the Minister of Home Affairs: this also concerned Lumumba's death.
