    THREE DAYS OF STATE FUNERAL RITES BEGAN TODAY (29 MARCH) FOR FORMER U.S. PRESIDENT DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER, WHO DIED IN THE WALTER REED ARMY HOSPITAL, WASHINGTON, ON FRIDAY AFTERNOON. GENERAL EISENHOWER'S BODY WILL LIE IN WASHINGTON CATHEDRAL ON SATURDAY AND UNDER THE GIANT DOME OF WASHINGTON'S CAPITAL ON SUNDAY. ON MONDAY (MARCH 31) THE FUNERAL SERVICE WILL BE HELD IN WASHINGTON CATHEDRAL.

    AFTER THE FUNERAL, GENERAL EISENHOWER'S BODY WILL BE TAKEN MORE THAN 1,000 MILES (1,6000 KM) BY TRAIN TO HIS BOYHOOD HOME IN ABILENE, KANSAS, FOR BURIAL ON WEDNESDAY (APRIL 2). THE ARRANGEMENTS FORT EH FUNERAL FOLLOW A 54-PAGE MASTER PLAN DRAWN UP IN 1966 AND APPROVED BY GENERAL EISENHOWER.

    DEATH CAME "QUIETLY AND WITHOUT DISTRESS" TO THE FORMER PRESIDENT, WHO WAS 78 AND HAD WAGED A STRUGGLE AGAINST ILLNESS FOR 14 YEARS. MRS. MAMIE EISENHOWER WAS AT HER HUSBAND'S BEDSIDE WITH THE GENERAL'S GRANDSON DAVID AND HIS WIFE JULIE, DAUGHTER OF PRESIDENT NIXON.

    MR NIXON, WHO WAS VICE-PRESIDENT TO GENERAL EISENHOWER, AT ONCE PROCLAIMED MONDAY A NATIONAL DAY OF MOURNING. HE WENT TO THE HOSPITAL WITH HIS WIFE AND HIS OTHER DAUGHTER, TRIXIE, TO OFFER HIS CONDOLENCE TO THE EISENHOWER FAMILY.

    IN THE OFFICIAL PROCLAMATION OF THE DAY OF MOURNING, MR. NIXON SAID THAT AS LONG AS FREE MEN CHERISHED THEIR FREEDOM, DWIGHT EISENHOWER WOULD STAND WITH THEM AS HE STOOD DURING WAR AND PEACE, STRONG, CONFIDENT AND COURAGEOUS.

    THE NATION HAD LOST A GREAT LEADER, A GREAT FRIEND AND A GREAT MAN, SAID PRESIDENT NIXON. THE GENERAL HELD A UNIQUE PLACE IN UNITED STATES HISTORY AND IN HER HEART AND IN THE HEARTS OF PEOPLE THE WORLD OVER.

    ON SUNDAY THE GENERAL'S BODY WILL BE TAKEN BY HEARSE TO NEAR THE WHITE HOUSE. THEN THE COFFIN WILL BE PLACED ON A CAISSON AND TAKEN AT A SLOW MARCH DOWN CONSTITUTION AVENUE TO THE CAPITOL FOR THE PUBLIC LYING-IN-STATE.

    DURING THE PROCESSION CANNON WILL FIRE THE 21-GUN SALUTE AND MILITARY BANDS WILL PLAY TO MUFFLED DRUMBEAT. SQUADRONS OF AIRFORCE PLANES WILL FLY OVER IN FINAL TRIBUTE.

    TRIBUTES TO GENERAL EISENHOWER HAVE POURED IN FROM NATIONAL LEADER AND HEADS OF STATE AND MANY WILL BE PRESENT AT THE FUNERAL SERVICE ON MONDAY. THE EISENHOWER FAMILY HAVE EXPRESSED THE WISH THAT, INSTEAD OF FLOWERS, FRIEND WILL DONATE TO CHARITIES OF THEIR CHOICE OR THOSE OF PRIME INTEREST TO GENERAL EISENHOWER DURING HIS LIFETIME.
