  • Description

Three Bolivian guerrillas, among six survivors of a band of more than 70 Marxist and left-wing Roman Catholic guerrillas who challenged the Ovando regime from the Teoponte district, have been granted political asylum by Chile. They were captured over two weeks ago by the Bolivian Army, but the Papal Nuncio in the capital, La Paz, successfully negotiated their release and asylum.

Chile's new left-wing government agreed on Thursday (5th November) to grant the three bolivians political asylum.

They included Oswaldo "Chato" Peredo....a follower of "Che" Guevara...and Mario Suarez Moreno, a former student leader. Peredo was the leader of a band of 30 guerrillas which held up the town of Teponte in mid-July and kidnapped two West German goldmine technicians. The Germans were released a few days later 10 guerrilla captives were released from goal by the government and flown to Chile.

After the kidnappings, the first resurgence of the National Liberation Army since the death Guevara in 1967, the Bolivian Army mounted a huge campaign to destroy the guerrillas.

As the captured guerrillas and three Chilean compatriots left the Vatican Embassy in La Paz on Thursday (5th November) to begin their journey to Chile, a large crowd flocked around them. The men were taken by the police to a nearby military air base and flown to Chile by transport aircraft.
