King Bhumibol Adulyadej officially opened Thailand's first ever national convention in Bangkok yesterday (18 December). The convention, appointed by the King last week, will elect from among its own ranks a National Assembly to replace the one nominated by the former Thai military regime which was overthrown in October.
Before 2,250 convention members at Bangkok's Royal Turf Club, King Bhumibol said that the purpose of the convention is to choose a National Assembly which would study the draft of a new constitution that is currently being drawn up by the largely civilian government of Prime Minister Sanya Dharmasakti. Mr. Sanya has promised to promulgate a new democratic constitution by April next year.
King Bhumibol formed the convention to allow wide public participation..in the first stage of the country's return to democracy. Convention members are drawn from all walks of Tbai society. They include singers, comedians and farmers as well as politicians and military officers.
The vote to decide who will be elected to the 229-member Assembly will take place today (19 December).
