  • Description

An International relief operation is airlifting food supplies to Yemen, where about two million people are suffering from famine.

Supplies are coming in from European countries including East Germany, Italy and other Common Market nations. The Taiwan Government has sent 5,000 tons of food.

Another 17,000 tons of food is being sent to Yemen under the supervision of the World Food Programme. The supplies include wheat from the United States.

After the food arrives at the airport it is trucked into the drought stricken Tihama area. The situation is expected to deteriorate further as spring rainfall was sparse in April and May.

People in the affected area will receive daily corn rations for 30 days and will be organised to build roads and dykes. In some areas farmers have already been forced to sell their animals to buy food at high prices.

The massive international relief operation has ensured that about half of the 217,000 tons of minimum cereal requirements for the next four months is assured.
