  • Description

Professor Ernest Amano Boateng, Chairman of the Environmental Protection Council of Ghana, said on Saturday (3 May) that the encroachment of deserts onto fertile land is the main environmental problem facing the world today.

Speaking at the end of the third session of the Governing Council of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in Nairobi, Professor Boateng -- who is Vice-President of the Council -- said the problems of water supply are of vital importance to stop and reverse the trend.

The Council decided to provide 500,000 dollars (about 220,000 pounds sterling) to support the programme and preparations for the U.N. Conference on Desertification to be held in 1977.

It also allocated three times that amount to the budget of HABITAT -- the U.N. Conference on Human Settlements planned for 1976.

Among other decisions reached during the two-and-a-half week meeting was one to hold a second Conference on the Human Environment not earlier than 1980. The first such conference was held in Stockholm in 1972 and resulted in, among other things, the foundation of UNEP.
