    THE BIENNIAL WINTER SPORTS MEETING FOR THE DISABLED WAS HELD THIS YEAR IN BAD WIESSE, WEST GERMANY. MORE THAN 150 COMPETITORS TOOK PART IN THE SKIING EVENTS.

    MANY OF THE COMPETITORS HAD ONLY ONE LEG, BUT AIDED BY SMALL AUXILIARY SKI-CRUTCHES, THEY WERE ABLE TO PUT UP TIMES ON THE SLALOM COURSE WHICH COMPARED WELL, AND WERE SOMETIMES BETTER, THAN NORMAL SKIERS. FOR THIS COURSE HAS BEEN OFFICIALLY APPROVED BY THE INTERNATIONAL FEDERATION OF SKIERS AND HAS BEEN USED BY INTERNATIONAL SKIERS. FIVE DAYS EARLIER OLYMPIC GOLD MEDAL WINNER MARIELLE GOITSCHEL HAD SHOWN HER SKILL ON IT.

    THERE WAS A SPECIAL CLASS AT THE MEETING FOR COMPETITORS WITH ONLY ARTIFICIAL LEGS. THEY SHOWED THEMSELVES CAPABLE OF HANDLING THE TRICKY COURSE.

    THE FIRST WINTER SPORTS MEETING FOR THE DISABLED WAS HELD IN 1948 - IT HAS BEEN HELD EVERY TWO-YEARS SINCE. SOME OF THE COMPETITORS WERE WAR VICTIMS, OTHERS HAVE LOST THEIR LEGS IN ACCIDENTS OR THROUGH DISEASE. MANY COME BACK TO GERMANY EVERY OTHER YEAR SPECIALLY FOR THE COMPETITION, SOME FROM MANY THOUSANDS OF MILES AWAY. THEIR AGES RANGE FROM 10 TO 60 YEARS OLD.
