    The first All-Africa University Games were opened in Accra on Friday (27 December) by the Ghanaian Commissioner for Education and Culture Colonel Emmanuel Nyante.

    About 2,000 competitors from universities in 17 African countries are taking part in football, athletics, swimming, table tennis, lawn tennis, volleyball, and Basketball during the nine-day games.

    Colonel Nyante was deputising for the Ghanaian Head of State Colonel Acheampong. The teams paraded around the El-Wak stadium after the ceremonial flame was lit and the first event - a football match between Gabon and Ghana - began.

    The games are being held under the auspices of the Federation of African Universities Sport (FASU) which was formed about three years ago.

    Competitors include Algeria, the Congo, Dahomey, Egypt, Gabon, Ghana, the Ivory Coast, Liberia, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leona, Sudan, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda, Zaire and Zambia.
