    SHOUTING ANTI-GOVERNMENT AND ANTI-JAPANESE SLOGANS, THROWING STONES AND RIOTING, AN ESTIMATED 2,000 STUDENTS FROM SEOUL'S FOUR PRINCIPAL COLLEGES AND HIGH SCHOOLS CLASHED WITH POLICE.FORMED INTO ANTI-RIOT SQUADS, THE POLICE SWUNG CLUBS AND QUICKLY BROKE UP THE MARCHING DEMONSTRATORS.

    ON ANOTHER OCCASION, 800 STUDENTS FROM UNIVERSITY ??? BROKE THROUGH THEIR GATE -- LOCKED BY THE AUTHORITIES -- AND MARCHED ON THE CENTRE OF THE CITY.BUT AWAITING THEM WERE 300 POLICE.IN A HARD-FOUGHT BATTLE, THE STUDENTS WERE ROUTED, BUT THEIR SUPPORTERS CARRIED ON THE PROTEST AT LONG RANGE WITH STONES AND OTHER MISSILES.

    TODAY, AFTER 3,500 DEMONSTRATORS RENEWED THEIR PROTEST, THE AUTHORITIES ANNOUNCED THAT 26 POLICEMEN HAD BEEN HURT IN THE DEMONSTRATIONS SO FAR ADDING THAT MANY MORE STUDENTS HAD BEEN HURT.HUNDREDS OF THE YOUNG DEMONSTRATORS WERE UNDER ARREST.DEMONSTRATIONS HAVE OCCURRED IN A NUMBER OF OTHER CENTRES THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY.

    JAPAN AND SOUTH KOREA RECENTLY INITIALLED DRAFT AGREEMENTS ON SEVERAL MAJOR OUTSTANDING ISSUES WHICH IT IS HOPED WILL LEAD TO A FORMAL TREATY ON POST-WAR RELATIONS BETWEEN THEM.LAST YEAR SIMILAR NEGOTIATIONS COLLAPSED FOLLOWING STUDENT DEMONSTRATIONS AND RIOTS IN SEOUL.RELATIONS BETWEEN THE TWO COUNTRIES HAVE BEEN BITTER EVER SINCE JAPAN FORMALLY ANNEXED KOREA IN 1910.
