  • Description

The Spanish Socialist Party's candidate for Mayor of Madrid, Professor Tierno Galvan, drew enthusiastic applause during a rally in a Madrid hotel on Sunday (25 March). His audience included the Socialist mayors of the cities of Cologne, Lisbon and Milan. They showed their support of Galvan's policies not only by their attendance but in speeches expressing solidarity with Spanish Socialists. On April 3, 26-million Spaniards will have their first opportunity since the end of the Civil War to elect eight thousand councillors from two hundred thousand candidates.

SYNOPSIS: Solidarity was the keynote of the Madrid rally for Professor Galvan, who is the Honorary President of the Spanish Socialist Party and its hope as Madrid's next Mayor.

The Socialists are expected to poll better in the council elections than they did against the ruling Centrist Party in the March General Election in Spain. Among rally delegates were three of Europe's Socialist Mayors from the cities of Cologne, Lisbon and Milan. They sowed their full-hearted support of Galvan in speeches which roused the capacity audience to cheers.

The Mayor of Cologne, Socialist John Van Nes Zigler praised Professor Galvan's policies which attack maladministration by corrupt officials in Spanish towns. A forward showing in the municipal elections is regarded as crucial to Socialist Party hopes for its stability and success.

Lisbon's Mayor, Ribeiro Machado, also expressed his solidarity with Spanish Socialist aspirations in the April polls. It will be the first time in 40 years in Spain that recognisably-democratic council elections will be held. A big 'shake-up' is predicated at the 'grass-roots' level of local government.

Carlo Tognoli, Mayor of Milan and one of Italy's most prominent politicians, urged Spanish socialists to work hard in support of their candidate for madrid's mayoral office. Tognoli is a strong believer in Euro-Socialism and a victory in Madrid would take his hope one step further towards reality.
