    AMONG SURTEES' RIVALS WHO WERE KNOCKED OUT OF THE RACE WERE JO BONNIER (SWEDEN) AND MIKE SPENCE (BRITAIN) WHO LEFT THE ROAD, GRAHAM HILL (BRITAIN) AND DENIS HULME (NEW ZEALAND) WHO FOUND THEMSELVES WITH A DROWNED MOTOR, JIM CLARK (BRITAIN) WHO ALSO HAD MECHANICAL TROUBLE AND JACKIE STEWART, BRITISH WINNER AT MONACO LAST MONTH, WHO CRASHED AND SUFFERED A SLIGHT CRACK IN HIS SHOULDER.

    AT TIMES, THE SPECTATORS COULD ONLY GUESS WHAT WAS GOING ON. THE DRIVING RAIN CUT SPEEDS BUT SEVEN INDOMITABLE DRIVERS SAILED ON.

    THE YOUNG AUSTRIAN, JOCHEN RINDT IN A COOPER-MASERATI TOOK THE LEAD IN THE FOURTH LAP AND STAYED TILL THE 24TH WHEN HE HAD TO SLOW DOWN WITH A TROUBLESOME ENGINE. SURTEES, 100 YARDS IN HIS WAKE, OVERTOOK HIM TO WIN.

    LORENZO BANDINI OF ITALY WAS THIRD AND NOW HEADS THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP TABLE. THE RACE WAS THE SECOND OF THIS SEASON'S CHAMPIONSHIP PROGRAMME. 50,000 PEOPLE BRAVED THE RAIN TO SEE THE BLURRED OUTLINES OF CARS GO BY IN A CLOUD OF SPRAY.

    THE 14.1 KILOMETRE FRANCORCHAMPS CIRCUIT, SET IN THE ARDENNES HILLS, IS THE FASTEST IN EUROPE. THE RACE WAS OVER 28 LAPS TOTALLING 395 KILOMETRES (245 MILES).

FIFTEEN SET OUT -- ONLY SEVEN GOT THROUGH TO THE END.
