  • Description

Blizzard conditions, which have paralysed much of the American Mid-West and left huge snow drifts over a wide area between the Rockies and the Great Lakes, have caused at least 20 deaths during the past two days (5th and 6th of January).

Prolonged storms have left the Iowa and Nebraska States particularly hard hit. Thousands of roads throughout the area are impassable, and 3,000 motorists were stranded on one highway alone. Many of the reported deaths have been caused by heart attacks resulting from the excessive exertions involved in clearing snow and trying to move stranded vehicles.

Chicago inhabitants have been coping with very cold weather conditions, but have suffered the added inconvenience of power failures resulting from storm-damaged high-tension electricity cables.

Rivers and lakes in the Mid-West have thick coatings of ice in one of the coldest winter snaps experienced for many seasons.
