    Hundreds of West Berliners queues at special offices in the city on Monday (13 March) to apply for passes allowing them to cross the Berlin Wall for Easter. West Berliners will be able to visit East Berlin and also East Germany -- closed to them since 1952 -- for three days during Easter in a concession granted in East Berlin reportedly to encourage ratification of Bonn's treaties with Moscow and Warsaw. Passes will also be issued for the Whitsun (Pentecost) period later in the year.

    Some 600,000 West Berliners have relatives in East Berlin and East Germany, but this time West Berliners with no relative will also be allowed visits for cultural, religious and tourist reasons.

    On Monday, uniformed East German officials crossed into West Berlin -- reportedly for the first time -- to assist i the form-issuing procedures in the city's five specially-opened "Wall Pass Application Offices".

    SYNOPSIS: Here, at the end of the British sector in West Berlin on Monday, uniformed East German officials crossed into West Berlin to assist in the issuing of passes. The passes will allow West Berliners to cross the Berlin Wall to visit East Berlin and East Germany. East Germany has been closed to them since 1952.

    West Berliners queued at five specially-opened "Wall Pass Application Offices" to apply for the passes which will be good for three days over Easter. Other passes are also being issued for the Whitsun period later in the year.

    Some six-hundred-thousand West Berliners have relatives in East Berlin and East Germany, but this time West Berliners with no relatives also will be allowed visits for cultural, religious and tourist reasons. As they applied for the passes, the West Berliners were interviewed by the East German officials who were at the offices.

    It's reported that the move to allow the passes is a concession granted in East Berlin to encourage ratification of Bonn's treaties with Moscow and Warsaw.
