  • Description

An 'anti-imperialist week', directed mainly against the United States and the war in Indo China, ended on Friday (28 May) in La Paz, Bolivia.

The week of anti-imperialist demonstrations came after a decision by the leftwing-Nationalist Government of President Juan Jose Torres on May 21st to order the U.S. Peace Corps out of the country.

The Government, under strong pressure from leftwing students, said the 100 Corps workers in Bolivia were 'unnecessary', and must be withdrawn.

The Peace Corps workers are currently gathering in La Paz from all over Bolivia, before flying home.

SYNOPSIS: A so-called 'anti-imperialist week' - directed particularly against the United States and the war in Indo-China - has just ended in La Paz, Bolivia.

Anti-American slogans are prominent in the University quarter, and thousands of people have marched through the streets condemning what they see as 'Yankee imperialism'. American flags have been burned.

Demonstrators affirm their support for the leaders and people of Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia, and for other popular revolutionary figures.

The week of anti-imperialist demonstrations came on the heals of a decision by the left-wing Nationalist Government of President Juan Torres on May twenty-first to order the U.S. peace corps out of the country.

Thousands of students gave blood to help communist troops in south-east Asia, in a telling demonstration of their allegiance.

These young people have exerted considerable pressure on the Bolivian Government to declare the 100 U.S. peace corps workers in the country unnecessary, and order their withdrawal.

The Peace Corps workers are gathering now in La Paz before flying home.
