  • Description

Parisians struggled to work on Monday morning (15 June) through monster traffic jams as the city's public transport system was paralysed by a 24 hour strike.

Almost all the 39,000 metro and bus workers joined in the walkout to back demands for an additional week of holiday for a total of six weeks a year.

Army lorries were pressed into service to bring some commuters into the city. But as rush hour began, only eight metro trains were running out of a total of 530 and about 100 buses out of the usual 3,500.

Pavements as well as roads were crowded as many people decided to set out early to walk to work.
