A military parade and a speech by President Ngouabi last Sunday (15 August) marked the eight anniversary of the coup in the People's Republic of the Congo which overthrew the country's first President, Abbe Fulbert Youlou in 1963.

The only foreign head of stats to attend the celebrations was President Nguema of Equatorial Guinea. Relations with the Democratic Republic of the Congo across the river have deteriorated again following a broadcast trial in Kinshasa in which some defendants claimed they had met President Ngouabi to discuss possible aid in overthrowing President Mobutu. In his speech, President Ngouabi denied this.

SYNOPSIS: In Brazzaville, the People's Republic of the Congo celebrated last Sunday the eighth anniversary of the 1963 coup which overthrew the country's first President, Abbe Fulbert Youlou. Congo Brazzaville's President, Marien Ngouabi, welcomed the only foreign head of state to attend the celebration a President Nguema of Equatorial Guinea. The opening speech was made by the First Secretary, Claude Ernest Ndalla.

Members of visiting diplomatic and military missions heard President Ngouabi deny allegations, made across the river in Kinshasa, that he had personally aided would-be guerrillas. These allegations, made in a broadcast trial, have again aggravated relations between Congo-Brazzaville and Congo-Kinshasa. The celebrations culminated in the traditional march-past by units of the militia.

Among the messages received by President Ngouabi was one from Premier Chou En-Lai of the People's Republic of China, pledging the full support of the entire Chinese people.
