Chu Lai is one of the most active airbases in South Viet Nam. The 80?

  • Description

Chu Lai is one of the most active airbases in South Viet Nam. The 80 fighter-bombers at the base--most of them are A-4 jets--are used day and night, even days a week.

One squadron, called the "Top Hats", made its 10,000th combat mission last week. The five fighter bombers attacked a Viet Cong ammunition and supply depot near Saigon.

A U.S. military spokesman said the Viet Cong force which recently wiped out a South Vietnamese army outpost was based at the depot. The U.S. planes fired rockets and dropped 250 pound bombs and napalm on their target. The leader of the "Top Hats" reported that his mission was successful.

The napalm was used even though the Marine Air Force Information office avoids using the word. Bad publicity over the use of napalm is the major reason the Marines are sensitive about mentioning it. But on this mission, the pilots said, they had to use the fiery substance. It was the only way, they added, to do a complete job.
