  • Description

Thousands of Africans gathered at Fort Portal, Western Uganda, Jan 30, to celebrate the 32nd anniversary of the accession of Omukama "King George", the hereditary ruler of Toro, one of four African Kingdoms within the British Protectorate.

Crowds moved in procession up the hillside to the ruler's residence to pay their respects. The Omukama emerged, dressed in royal blue, protected from the sun by a huge yellow umbrella, and escorted by a bodyguard of spearmen and a band of drummers.

After inspecting a guard of honour mounted by African police, the Omukama took the salute at a march-past of youth groups.

In a speech to his Parliament - the Rukurato - the Omukama of Toro is reported to have said his people were in a state of apprehension in view of what he called "imminent changes confronting Uganda". The kingdoms of Toro, Bunyoro and Ankole are all included in Uganda's Western Province, while the fourth monarchical state forms a whole Province on its own - Buganda, which declared itself independent a month ago.
