Background: ONE OF THE SMALLEST STATES IN THE UNITED STATES, NEW HAMPSHIRE, HAS BECOME THE FOCUS OF WORLD ATTENTION DURING THE PAST FEW WEEKS. TODAY (TUESDAY) THE PROCESS OF ELECTING THE NEXT PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES BEGINS IN THE QUIET, PICTURESQUE TOWNS AND VILLAGES OF NEW HAMPSHIRE, AS VOTERS GO TO THE POLLS IN SEPARATE DEMOCRATIC AND REPUBLICAN "POPULARITY CONTESTS" TO INDICATE THEIR PREFERENCES FOR PARTY NOMINEES IN THE NOVEMBER PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS. IN THE PAST FEW DAYS, CAMPAIGNING BY THE CANDIDATES HAS INTENSIFIED AND OBSERVERS ARE CLOSELY WATCHING THIS FIRST OF A SERIES OF FIFTEEN PRIMARY ELECTIONS.

THE ONLY MAJOR CANDIDATE IN THE REPUBLICAN PARTY PRIMARY IS MR. RICHARD NIXON, THE 54-YEAR-OLD NEW YORK LAWYER WHO HAS VICE-PRESIDENT UNDER PRESIDENT EISENHOWER FROM 1953 TO 1961. HOWEVER, MR. NIXON IS SEEKING A VICTORY BIG ENOUGH TO BLOCK THE PRESIDENTIAL ASPIRATIONS OF HIS UNDECLARED RIVAL FOR THE REPUBLICAN NOMINATION, GOVERNOR NELSON ROCKEFELLER OF NEW YORK. A SUBSTANTIAL "WRITE-IN" VOTE FOR GOVERNOR ROCKEFELLER MIGHT LURE HIM TO ANNOUNCE HIS FORMAL ENTRY INTO THE WHITE HOUSE RACE.

ON SUNDAY, (10 MARCH) 33 REPUBLICAN LEADERS CALLED ON GOVERNOR ROCKEFELLER AND URGED HIM TO CHALLENGE RICHARD NIXON FOR THE NOMINATION. ROCKEFELLER REFUSED TO COMMIT HIMSELF BUT INDICATED HE MAY HAVE AN ANSWER FOR THEM ON FRIDAY, THE DAY AFTER THE PRIMARY.

THE MAIN FOCUS IS ON THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY PRIMARY, IN WHICH VIETNAM CRITIC, SENATOR EUGENE MCCARTHY HAS BASED VIRTUALLY HIS ENTIRE CAMPAIGN IN OPPOSITION TO PRESIDENT JOHNSON'S HANDLING OF THE WAR.

THE PRESIDENT'S NAME IS NOT ON THE BALLOT BUT HIS SUPPORTERS HAVE MOUNTED AN INTENSIVE CAMPAIGN TO SECURE "WRITE-IN" VOTES. THE REGULAR DEMOCRAT PARTY ORGANISATION HAS EXPRESSED CONCERN AT SENATOR McCARTHY'S GAIN IN POPULARITY. IN TWO WEEKS, THE VIETNAM CRITIC HAS INCREASED HIS PUBLIC OPINION POLL RATING FROM 15 PER CENT TO AS MUCH AS 30 PER CENT. IF THIS TREND IS REFLECTED IN THE PRIMARY, IT WILL MEAN A POLITICAL SET-BACK TO PRESIDENT JOHNSON. MOST OF McCARTHY'S SUPPORT IS REPORTED TO BE COMING FROM THE YOUNG PEOPLE OF NEW HAMPSHIRE, COLLEGE STUDENTS, YOUNG COUPLES AND INTELLECTUALS. MOVIE STARS HAVE ADDED THEIR WEIGHT TO HIS CAMPAIGN AND HAVE COME TO NEW HAMPSHIRE TO HELP HIS CAUSE. ROBERT RYAN IS SHOWN IN THE FILM.
