  • Description

An influential panel recommended on Monday (26 April) to President Nixon that the United States support the admission of the People's Republic of China to the United Nations under a two China policy.

The Presidential panel, headed by former U.N. Ambassador Henry Cabot Lodge, said that under no circumstances should the United States agree to the expulsion of the Taiwan Government.

THE FINDINGS OF THE PANEL COME AT A TIME WHEN THE UNITED STATES IS CURRENTLY REVIEWING ITS POSITION ON WHETHER TO ABANDON LONG-STANDING AMERICAN OPPOSITION TO PEKING'S MEMBERSHIP IN THE UNITED NATIONS. POLITICAL OBSERVERS SAY THAT IT COULD BE NO SURPRISE IF THE PRESIDENT WERE TO FORMALLY EMBRACE THE RECOMMENDATION OF THE COMMISSION.
