    The Turkish and British Prime Ministers ended crisis talks on the Cyprus situation on Thursday (18 July) by agreeing to keep in close touch on the consequences of Monday's coup. An announcement after the discussions between Turkey's leader, Mr. Bulent Ecevit and Britain's Mr. harold Wilson said the two leaders had expressed concern at recent events on the island which led to the overthrow of President Makarios.

    Meantime, in Turkey, the country's armed forces were put on full alert. News of the coup and its subsequent events were widely reported and read in newspapers. Strict security is in force in Istanbul and newsmen attempting to film military preparations have been prevented from doing so.
