  • Description

In Nepal this week work came to a halt on the farms throughout the Himalayan Kingdom. The farmers and peasants were either weeping or drinking over their latest crops.

Mostly it was drinking to thank the gods for a bumper harvest. However, there were others not so fortunate who tearfully prayed for better luck next year.

Communal drinking parties are a common feature in Nepal. Any excuse is seized upon for a drinking binge - particularly this time of the year at the end of the four-month rainy season.

Cheap and crude alcoholic drinks - mainly fiery rice wine distilled by the womenfolk - are drunk with gusto to celebrate the fulfilment of any desire, such as in this case a good crop. Everyone joins in.

The rich landowners provide free rice wine and, in some cases, genuine Scotch whisky. Some peasants march up for four days to join the drinking and dancing revelry.
