  • Description

GIBRALTAR, December 4th: The Rhodesia crisis talks - Mr. Ian Smith, the rebel Rhodesian leader, left for home today after two days of talks on the Rhodesian independence crisis with Britain's Premier, Mr. Harold Wilson. Mr. Wilson was expected to fly back to London after dawn. No hint has so far been given on the outcome of the talks.

The last-minute effort to settle the Rhodesian crisis began on Friday, when Mr. Wilson met Mr. Smith on board the British cruiser, H.M.S.Tiger, for the first time since U.D.I. was declared in November, 1965. The talks lasted till midnight and were resumed at seven o'clock yesterday morning, while the Tiger cruised in the Mediterranean. She put into Gibraltar again just before nine o'clock yesterday evening.

Late last night, the British Ministry of Defence released the first film taken on board the Tiger during the talks. The film shows Sir Humphrey Gibbs, the constitutional Head of Government in Rhodesia, and Sir Hugh Beadle, Rhodesia's Chief Justice, walking on the deck of the Tiger with Admiral Pollock, of the British Royal Navy, and Captain Kirkby, the Commander of H.M.S.Tiger.

Whilst at sea, the Tiger's only physical communication with shore was by helicopter. All official letters and documents had to be taken to the cruiser in this way. And British civil servants carrying important documents had to be winched to and from the Tiger's deck.
