Atherton's statement: Today's talks were very good and detailed. Purpose to discuss and compare impressions and assessments of what resulted from Leeds talks and to see what this can provide as basis of ongoing negotiations. This purpose was accomplished in the talks today which were useful and helpful as we look forward to next round of negotiations. Atherton's reply to question of whether He's still optimistic after Egypt's expulsion of Israeli delegation was that the U.S. government would have to reply to that but that he feels Leeds talks were useful and would be great utility to further talks. The opportunity to make progress in these talks is still there. These talks were to assess where we were from last round and to begin to get our thinking in order for next round. Any new ideas that will be injected will be injected in next round. We've been talking about a new round when Secretary Vance comes to the area. U.S. government is preceding on idea that there will be further talks. Can't say FM talks will absolutely be resumed but expectation is that they'll be able to arrange such talks even though haven't yet been agreed on and confirmed.
Dayan thanked Atherton for coming and sharing his impression of the thinking in Saudi Arabia and Jordan. They discussed approach to continuation of talks. If Egyptians are willing to continue Israel is. Dayan's impression of Leeds talks as he expressed in Knesset are accurate with Atherton's impression of these talks.
